10. A Roof Means Nothing without the Right Floor

It’s extremely cold. You have found yourself lost in the woods, and you know that you need to make a shelter. Where do you start first?

If you said with the roof, this is probably the result of watching too many so-called survivor shows. A roof is an excellent thing to have, whether it comes from logs pushed together or the inside of a small cave, but it’s not your first priority.

Instead, you need to build a bed on the ground that will protect you from the cold. In other words, having the right floor can be the difference between life and death.

This isn’t about comfort, so the bottom of the bed can be made of logs, twigs, rocks, etc. Hopefully, you’ll have something softer to put over it such as a blanket.

Either way, though, you want to be raised up off of the ground when you sit or lie down. Failure to do this could kill you through exposure to the cold even if you have built a shelter around you.
