Whenever you will be driving during the winter, it is wise to ensure that you have blankets and extra clothing that you can use for layering during an emergency. A thermal emergency blanket is an ideal way to reduce heat loss, and you can place other blankets over top of this item. You should also have at least one extra pair of socks and gloves in your vehicle, along with snow boots. A thick ski mask and a scarf will offer protection for your face and neck.

Be sure that these items are kept in an easily accessible area of your car. You should never need to get into the trunk to keep warm or eat. Ideally, you will have your kit split into two bags: one inside the car that will keep you warm and fed, and another one in the trunk for preforming roadside repairs.
