How To Start a Fire With Urine [VIDEO]

True or False: You can start a fire with your own pee.

TRUE. Depending on how hydrated you are, it may be far easier than you would ever think. In fact, if you can fill a clear plastic water bottle with fairly clear urine, then you have a lens. With that lens, although its not as efficient as a magnifying glass, can be used in much the same way.

By holding the bottle upside down and allowing sunlight to pass through the convex top, you can focus the light onto tinder and create smoldering embers. Simply fan those embers, add tinder, and urine business!

If you’re dehydrated, then you may need a bit more fire power (SEE VIDEO BELOW). The method devised by Grant Thompson is a bit more messy, but very inventive. Plus, it works with regular water too.

Some of you may not be inclined to use this information. In fact, I sincerely hope you never need or want to… it’s a little gross. Still, I approach all preparedness topics from the perspective that knowledge is power.

Understanding how to use your own urine to ignite a survival fire sounds silly and pretty darned unlikely, but it may just get the wheels turning. This level of resourcefulness may be required of you someday, and if it is, you’ll have the blueprint for starting a fire with nothing but a packed lunch… Pretty freaking cool.

  1. Packing a fire starter aylwas just makes sense. Our favorite is the one I started making in Boy Scouts – the paper egg carton with its cups stuffed with tiny twigs/shavings/chain saw chips/etc and filled with melted wax. Make sure the wax is hot enough to “wet” the paper carton and that will keep the carton from getting wet. When cold, you have a dozen easily separated, clean, waterproof, easily lit, 5 minute hot burning fire starter. This starter can be bounced around in the bottom of your pack, leave nothing but wax smudges on the fabric and be ready for immediate use.I have a old crock pot that heats the wax flamelessly and to an adequate temperature. Between manufacturing sessions, I collect old candles and toss them into the crock pot for storage until the next session. They make nice gifts for your camping friends too.
