As you can see, part of the trick to surviving these encounters is to be aware of what is attacking you. After all, if you can’t identify the difference between a wild dog and a coyote, your actions could end up getting you killed. Therefore, we recommend spending time familiarizing yourself with how to identify each of these animals based on their physical appearance, scat, footprints and common territories.

On a side note, if you do somehow end up in the ocean facing off with a shark, stay calm, move slowly toward the closest land or boat without getting into the shark’s path or taking your eyes off of it and, if necessary, defend yourself with hard jabs to the gills and face. A pole, speargun or other hard object will work best, but you can also use your feet, knees, elbows and wrists.
