9. Prairie Turnip
The prairie turnip offers a good starchy root vegetable that was once a favorite food for some American Indian tribes. The roots are usually white, and they provide necessary nutrients such as minerals, protein and carbohydrates. You can typically find this plant in dry woodlands and prairies. The purple blooms flower in early summer, which makes it easy to track down and harvest the edible roots.
