5. Start a Fire with Petroleum Jelly

Most of us assume we could easily start a fire with minimal supplies during an emergency, but the truth is that many people find this process to be surprisingly difficult. Fortunately, you can probably find the items you’ll need to start a fire in any medicine cabinet. Take a glob of petroleum jelly and work it into a cotton ball, then repeat this process several times. Place your fully saturated cotton balls in your fireplace or fire pit, light them on fire and stack wood on top of them. This will get a nice fire going without the need for a fire starting kit or an extreme amount of patience. With this simple trick, you can have light, heat and a cooking resource!
