5. Never Leave Home Once a Tornado is Spotted
The worst place to be during a tornado is on the road. If you’re watching the storm tracker on TV and it appears that the tornado is headed straight for your neighborhood, this rule still applies.
Even if know of a storm shelter a few miles away, don’t risk it. There may be downed power lines or traffic jams between you and your destination that cause you to be in the most vulnerable of all places during the tornado: In your car.
Tornadoes are unpredictable and a funnel cloud can change directions at any moment, or even fizzle out entirely before it reaches you. Leaving the shelter of your home during the most critical moments simply puts you at an even greater risk.
