2. Coyotes and Wild Dogs

Where Are Coyotes Found?

Coyotes can be found throughout North America, and they will sometimes leave the woods in search of food. The type of attack that these creatures may launch on a human is similar to what a wild dog or even a wolf might do under the right circumstances. With this in mind, the following tips can help you avoid encounters with all members of the canine family.

Discouraging Coyotes from Attacking

If your property faces the woods, be sure to keep your trees and shrubbery well-trimmed to eliminate potential hiding spots for coyotes and wild dogs. You can also install a motion-detector lighting system to scare coyotes away. In the woods, you can make noise with a whistle to let coyotes know that you are nearby. Coyotes may shadow you from a distance to ensure that you do not go near their den, but they usually do not attack without provocation.

Surviving a Coyote Attack

If a coyote gets close to you, it will be important to stand your ground. Do not run, and make sure that you maintain eye contact. You should also take steps to make yourself seem more intimidating, such as shouting and waving your arms around. If this does not work, you can throw clumps of dirt or sticks at the animal. It is also a good idea to always have a walking stick with you because you can use the stick for self-defense. Be sure to back away slowly without breaking eye contact or turning around. If the coyote lunges at you, protect your neck to reduce your risk of suffering from a fatal wound.
