As always, you need to take personal responsibility for dressing appropriately for the woods. A hot day can make it tempting to wear shorts and a t-shirt, but this is going to dramatically increase your risk of getting Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya from a mosquito, along with boosting your odds of contracting Lyme disease from a tick. Therefore, you need to wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants. You can also wear a hat with mosquito netting, avoid areas with stagnant water and stay inside during the dusk and dawn hours. Additionally, please note that mosquitoes are more likely to be active during the day if the sky is cloudy.

By staying aware, making a citronella torch and following these other tips, it is possible for you to protect yourself and your loved ones from the danger that is presented by the Zika virus. Keep in mind that if someone does contract Zika, they can transmit it to other humans through sexual contact or their infected blood. This is yet another reason to keep condoms in your bug out bag and to always wear gloves when treating someone else’s wound!
