What is the Zika Virus?

Before we can talk about safeguarding yourself from the Zika virus, it is important to know exactly what we are dealing with. Most people who contract Zika will experience mild, flulike symptoms such as a fever and joint pain. It is also possible to develop a rash and conjunctivitis, which is more commonly referred to as pink eye.

The biggest risk associated with the Zika virus is to pregnant women. If a woman is bitten by a mosquito carrying Zika while she is pregnant, her baby has high odds of being born with microcephaly or any number of potential fatal birth defects. With this in mind, it is up to each of you to protect the people you love.
