champ3. Champion Power Equipment – 3,100-Watt Inverter Generator

Like Honda and Yamaha, Champion has an entry into 2,000-Watt class of portable generators. If we were doing a straight up apples to apples comparison, we would have to choose that model.

But why go for a 2,000-watt generator for $600, when you could get a 3,100-watt version and still come in well below the cost of a Honda or Yamaha? Yep… That’s what we thought too.

The advantage of the Champion model is that you get a little more bang for your buck, 2,800 watts rated, versus 1,600 at this price point. What you lose is a little confidence and reliability. Champion does have a good reputation, just not as good as the top two.

This generator has a runtime of 8 hours on a full tank (1.6 gallons), so it is a little bit thirstier, but still relatively efficient — especially if you are using it to charge deep cycle batteries.

Champion’s inverter technology, while not as highly regarded, advertises that it’s safe for “sensitive electronics” like computers and large appliances. This model’s also equipped with overload protection.

The 177cc engine is a bit on the heavy side (80lbs), which is why this model has wheels. On the other hand, it’s just as quiet as the competition, with substantially more output.

Price: $835
