Cougars, also known as mountain lions, are large, strong and vicious. The best way to survive this encounter is to avoid being attacked. Studies show you’re slightly more likely to be attacked and injured if you stand still instead of backing up. However, backing up will increase your odds of dying if you are attacked.

Whether you’re standing still or slowly backing out of the area, you can make yourself more intimidating by standing tall, raising your arms above your head and making a lot of loud noises. If you have to fight back, grab a stick or anything else handy and ram it into the side of the cougar’s head. You may also be able to get the cougar to let you go by jabbing your thumb into one of its eyes.

As always, do your best to protect your vital areas during an attack. This includes your face, throat and the back of your neck.
