Step Four: Do a Smell and Taste Test
The chlorine smell that you undoubtedly noticed after completing step two should be eliminated or drastically reduced. If you still smell a strong chlorine odor, you may want to filter the water again into a third container.
You can also aerate the water to remove the smell by pouring it back and forth between two clean containers. If this does not work, it is possible that you used too much shock. Either way, as soon as you get the water to smell relatively normal, you should be able to taste test it. Do not expect it taste exactly like your tap water, but it should be pleasant to drink and should not cause any gastrointestinal problems.
