Call Your Fears By Name
There’s nothing to fear but fear itself. We’ve all heard this and maybe even pondered what this nonsense is supposed to mean. When it comes to building the mental toughness you’ll need in a emergency situation, the greatest fear is the one you’re so afraid of, you don’t even want to talk about it.
We naturally avoid and deny that which we are afraid of. It’s human nature to avoid situations that cause you immense stress or mental distress. These can be simple fears of failure, or something like the fear of heights.
For example, let’s say you are squeamish at the sight of blood. You may even faint. You didn’t choose to be this way any more than you can switch it off at will. Still, it’s there.
If you know this is the case, you can start working to overcome it. You can verbalize it in a situation where it may become a problem. Eventually, you can even overcome it.
Over time, ignoring a fear only means that you will become more afraid of it exposing itself at a critical moment.
