Bleach

Household bleach has been found to be a useful tool in cleaning and disinfecting the home. If you’re looking to kill bacteria and other viruses in your water, bleach is also handy at purifying the liquid. But the amount you use is typically dependent on the temperature and quality of your water. If your water is murky or cold, you’ll need approximately 4 drops of bleach per quart of water. If your water is clear and warm, 2 drops should suffice.

Once the chemical has been added, you’ll want to place the cap on your container of water and shake for a couple of minutes. Unscrew the water lid and turn it over, letting a small amount of water flow out of the bottle.

This action allows you to clean both the cap and threads of the water bottle. Place the bottle in a dark spot such as the shade for 30 minutes. If you open the bottle after the allotted time, you should smell chlorine. If you don’t, you may need to add another drop or two. In order for the bleach to be effective, you don’t want to use a product that has exceeded its expiration date.
