Buckshot or Bust?
Contrary to many self-defense gurus, I don’t take a “Buckshot or no shot” attitude towards home-defense ammunition. While 00 buckshot is the best known size, there are many smaller calibers that pack plenty of punch and create larger patterns. There’s nothing wrong with No. 4 buckshot.
If you live in an apartment with shared walls, then you might even consider a non-buckshot load that has less sheet-rock penetrating power. In my opinion, steel or lead shot will easily get the job done.
While it’s true that a shotgun may not be the preferred weapon of a highly skilled, highly trained SWAT officer, it does offer a compelling set of advantages to the typical civilian homeowner. Shooting down a 15 foot hallway, a shotgun delivers a pretty forgiving spread pattern of about 12 inches in diameter. And even if you miss, jack another shell in and try again… You do have to aim it, of course.
