4. Seal Your Attic Door

For most people, an attic is a catch-all space where junk and seasonal items are stored. If this is the case in your house, you should definitely seal it up to prevent heat loss. First, be sure to block any attic windows with plastic, thick curtains or any of the other previously mentioned methods. Next, put weather stripping around the attic door. If you won’t be going into the attic at all, you can also tape plastic over the outside of the door for an added layer of insulation.

NOTE: If you have a heating source upstairs such as a vent, the attic may actually become the warmest option during the winter. This is because hot air rises, and the attic is typically more enclosed than the open flow of a living room, dining room and kitchen combo.
