5. Close the Chimney Damper
Whenever there’s a fire in your fireplace, you must keep the chimney flue and damper open for safety. However, when the fire is out, you can actually end up losing a lot of heat if the damper stays open.
Therefore, it’s best to ensure that the damper is closed if you won’t be using the fireplace as a source of light or heat. Additionally, if you don’t plan to use it at all, you can seal off the fireplace for the winter with a piece of plastic tarp.
Remember: anything that provides an opening into your home contributes to heat loss. The most important thing to do is keep as much heat as possible inside the house.
