Once you can see that the seal is mostly perforated, carefully squeeze the can on its sides until the lid begins to separate.

To do this with the least force possible (which makes it a lot safer) rotate the can between each squeeze.

If it doesn’t pop off easily, you may need a bit more sanding. Inspect the seal closely and return to step 1.
